Preparing for your admission

Will you soon be admitted to our hospital? Then it is certainly useful to prepare yourself well. We will provide you with all the information you need for this.

• Do I have to undergo preliminary examinations?

  Your doctor may want to have some tests performed prior to your admission. For example, an anaesthetist can schedule a consultation based on your answers to the preoperative questionnaire.

  If you need to undergo an additional examination, your attending physician will inform you.

• Do I have to have fasted before my admission?

  You must always have fasted before an operation. It is best to follow the instructions of your attending physician for this. In general, you are not allowed to eat after midnight if your surgery is scheduled for the following morning. Drinking water, coffee and tea without milk, liquids and noncarbonated energy drinks and fruit juice without pulp, is allowed up to 2 hours before the start of your anaesthesia. Brushing your teeth is also allowed. Smoking is not allowed for 24 hours before your surgery.

  If you come for treatment other than surgery, you should only fast if your doctor has instructed you to do so.

• Whom should I contact for administrative questions about my admission?

  We will call you two business days before your admission to communicate your admission time. At this time you can ask your administrative questions.

• Can I provide information on my choice of room?

  Your attending physician will ask about this when scheduling your admission. Please note that your choice of room may have an impact on the cost of your stay with us.

  You should therefore ask your insurance and/or health insurance fund which costs will be reimbursed. You can find more information here.

  Would you like to change your choice of room? You can do so when we call you, two business days before your admission. Ultimately, your room choice will be final when you sign your admission statement.

• Who should I notify?

  In general, it's a good idea to inform your GP, health insurance fund and hospitalisation insurance (if you have one). They will support you, tell you which certificates you need and give you a clearer picture of the cost of your stay.

  Also, don't forget to inform your employer or school.

• When will I find out my time of admission?

  Two business days before your admission, after 2 p.m., you will receive a phone call from us to communicate your admission time and assigned room type.

• Which forms do I have to fill out?

  You will receive all information about your procedure or examination from your attending physician. Depending on the reason for your admission, you will have to fill out different forms. This can be a list of medication you are taking at home, a preoperative questionnaire, or a consent form.

  For your treatment and care

  Your attending physician will go over all the information we need to optimise your treatment and care. This may concern the following information:

  • Preoperative questionnaire
  • Home care form
  • Referral letter from your GP
  • Results of preliminary studies
  • Medication you are taking at home in the original packaging and medication overview
  • Allergy list
  • Diet list
  • Blood type card
  • …

  For your stay

  Outpatient admission

  • Dressing gown and sturdy, preferably closed-toe, slippers
  • Something to keep yourself busy, such as reading matter
  • If applicable: a box for your hearing aid, eyeglasses or dentures
  • Your medication list and medication for that day

  For admission with overnight stay

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, towels, washcloths, liquid soap, comb, shampoo…)
  • Nightwear and underwear
  • Dressing gown and sturdy, preferably closed-toe, slippers
  • Something to keep yourself busy, such as reading matter
  • If applicable: a box for your hearing aid, eyeglasses or dentures

  Keep in mind that theft can happen quickly, also in a hospital. Therefore, do not bring any valuables such as jewellery. We are not responsible for theft.

• What steps can I take myself to lower the risk of infections?
  • General hygiene is very important. Wash your body thoroughly with soap and water and brush your teeth before coming to the hospital.
  • Disinfect your hands when entering the hospital and wash your hands after using the toilet, after blowing your nose and before and after a meal.
  • Make sure that both your fingernails and toenails are clean and trim them short if possible.
  • Do not wear make-up or cosmetic products such as deodorant.
  • Leave jewellery, piercings and contact lenses off.
  • It is best not to remove hair in advance, as this can lead to local inflammations. A health care provider will help you with hair removal if necessary.

• What else should I do to prepare for my admission?

  Arrange your discharge along with your admission

  The hospitalisation period is sometimes short. You should assume that you will continue your recovery at home. That is why it's important to prepare your home situation. You may want to opt for home nursing or physiotherapy, you may need support materials (such as a walker), meal delivery and so on.

  Provide a certificate for your employer or school

  When you stay in our hospital, you cannot go to work or go to school. Ask your doctor for a certificate of illness for the period in which you are absent and send it to your employer or school as soon as possible.

  Ask your health insurance fund for a certificate of incapacity for work if you will be incapacitated for more than 1 month

  This form must be completed by you and your employer and then returned to your health insurance fund. This entitles you to a replacement income from the health insurance fund.

  Are you self-employed?

  Have you taken out a guaranteed income insurance policy? Then you should contact your insurance company.

  Are you unemployed?

  Please contact the National Employment Office (RVA).

  Report an accident

  An accident at work, a traffic accident, a sports accident, a fall at home... All of these must be reported to your health insurance fund. You can do this via the "accident report" form that you can obtain from your health insurance fund.
